Article summary

This document provides a basic understanding of Tegsoft system redundancy and explains how to configure redundancy and replication.

One key concept of implementing software fault tolerance is redundancy and replication

Redundancy

Redundancy provides multiple identical instances of the same system and switching to one of the remaining instances in case of a failure (failover) by syncing critical data or services with the intention of increased reliability and availability of the system.

Tegsoft system is structured considering the grid computing environment. In grid computing environments, if any of the nodes is down, the other nodes keep the services up and running to ensure the system is available without downtime. For this reason, it is recommended to build redundancy and fault recovery into the model.

Tegsoft system supports two types of redundancy. These are Local and Geographical redundancy.

➤  Local Redundancy: Local Redundancy ensures that in case of failure of one of the servers, the other one located in the same place automatically start working.

➤  Geographical (Geo) Redundancy: Geo-redundancy means placing servers in geographically different data centers.

In Tegsoft redundancy, there are 3 backup types; Cold Backup, Warm Backup, and Hot Backup.

➤  Cold Backup: Only the primary server is active, the secondary server is powered off. Thus preserving the reliability of the server, so it takes time to bring it online. Cold backup is the safest way to backup data as no files can be changed during the backup.

➤  Warm Backup: The primary server is active, the secondary server is on standby. This is when servers are running, but are not currently in use, or are turned on every now and again to get updates from the server. Warm backups are generally used for the mirroring of data and services.

➤  Hot Backup: Both servers are active. The reason for performing hot backups is that it minimizes downtime on a day-to-day basis, which is especially useful for systems that require 24/7 operation. Hot Backup has an important role for load-balancing structure among multiple instances.

Replication

Replication means providing multiple identical instances of the same system, directing tasks or requests to all of them in parallel.

Tegsoft System Replication is a reliable high availability and disaster recovery solution that provides continuous synchronization of a Tegsoft data to a secondary location either in the same data center or remote server.

System Replication is a standard Tegsoft feature. In this method, desired data is replicated to the secondary server and data is pre-loaded into memory on the secondary server which helps to reduce the recovery time objective (RTO) significantly. So, in case of a failover, the secondary server will be able to work as primary server straightaway.

Tegsoft System Replication process is visually represented in the diagram below.
